Pongal Festival is celebrated for 4 days.
- Bhogi – Jan 13th (Monday) – People will segregate and discard things that are no longer useful to them on this day
- Pongal – Jan 14th (Tuesday) – People will worship Sun God for Good harvest in the year. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Tamil month ‘Thai’
- Mattu Pongal – Jan 15th (Wednesday) – Bull and Cow will be worshiped in the house
- Kaanum Pongal – Jan 16th (Thursday) – People will go on a tour and have Pongal
People thank the Sun God for the good harvest in the year, by offering sweet named ‘Pongal’. On the day of Pongal, People will rise early, take bath, wear new dress, decorate the courtyard with Kolam (Rangoli) and flowers.
At the auspicious time, People will start making ‘Pongal’ prasadam using rice, jaggery, ghee, tender coconut, dry fruits, cardamom etc. When the Pot used to make Pongal overflows people will shout ‘Pongalo Pongal’ in joy.
Vegetables, fruits, coconut, sugarcane (karumbu in tamil), turmeric and ginger saplings will be also be offered to God in a Banana leaf and Deeparadhanai will be done. Greetings, gifts will be exchanged with relatives and neighbours.
